sarielangel: Question about housing (Xposted, verious rat communities)
a freind of mine Is gifting me a 50 gallon fish tank, for my little ratlets. Its defantly got enough space, but im worried about ventilation? (wire cages are not an option for this house).for any of you who have your rats in tanks, what do you do to keep it ventilated? will it be enough that its larger, or will i need to add holes and shelving as well?

If you decide to use a tank, I suggest making a tank topper for it. Tanks just are not good for rats when used alone, unless you're keeping it SPOTLESS so there is no lung damage.

yea I hated using a tank. You need to clean it ALL the time.. like daily. I have messy rats tho so maybe that doesnt help. Its so much better now that I have wire cages

Ive only got 2 and they are under a year old, so I dont think it will be too messy, but that is what vaccum attachments are for

yea I only used them for when my ratties were babies. I had 13 at once lol so I NEEDED to use a tank for the extra room. I had four to tank when they were really little then 3 after they were bigger. They're just fine if you keep up with cleaning them.

thanks everyone...I really apreciate it. I was seriously thinking of quiting LJ intirely after the response from the other rat community. thanks for being understanding and non judgemental. And I'll be sure to post pics of the boys in their happy new home when I get them settled.
