Hello. Im Sariel, I was hoping the group could help me out with a question I have regarding the age of my new baby rattie.

He's a pink-eyed-white male.
I rescued him from the feeder section of our local pet shop. Ive never had a rat this young before, and I was wondering if you could help me figure out how young he is. (also..he's defanitly a male, but his testicals havent shown up yet, is that normal? does that mean he's under 6 weeks?).  thanks

Testes not showing up could be many things... some boys drop late, or never drop them. It seems to be more common now than it used to be (It's genetic). Also, stress, illness, and enviromental change can also cause them to bring them up for protection. Also if it's cold they will brng them up. And, at that age they are still covered in fur, so not as visible.

He looks in THAT pic around 9 weeks... based on the face, and headshape. He LOOKS like he's getting his adult coat, has lost the "baby face" and is in an akward adolesent stage. It's not the greatest pic though.

And so you know, a BOUGHT rat, is never a 'rescue'. If you buy a rat from a retail establishment you didn't 'rescue' anything, except the store that made an easy buck, and will be bringing in more rats to replace him since they obviously sell.

Actualy In this case it is. I convinced the pet shop owner that he would make more money selling them as pets, then as feeders. and little Yuki was his first pet rat sale!. :)

but I agree with you on the rest of it. I'll try to get a better pic of him tonight, (he realy doenest like getting his picture taken yet). you say some males never drop them at all? I assumed that he was just holding them in because of stress in the shop, but he's been here a month, and seems realy happy. Still no testies..maybe he's just holding them in whenever i go to look.
